The 77 convocation of Andhra University
Visakhapatnam, May 15: The Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of Andhra University, Mr E.S.L. Narsasimhan, observed that he was happy to address the graduating class of a university that had been nurtured by visionaries like Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Sir C.R. Reddy, who bequeathed a tradition of academic excellence among their students.
Observing that the Andhra University had been at the forefront of academic activity and social renaissance for over seven decades, he said, “In the portals of these great institutions, we come face to face with great ideas that shape our lives in a decisive manner. The thrust of education imparted in a university should be characterised by a single-minded quest to pursue knowledge in its finest form.”
He also advised students not to go astray from this sacred mission on account of diverting thoughts or popular causes.
The chief guest and scientific advisor to Ministry of Defence, Dr V.K. Saraswat, advised students to create a knowledge based on the principle of sustainability. He advised the youngsters to help India continue leverage its strengths to assume a leadership role and take on the challenges posed to build a new and resurgent India.
The vice-chancellor, Prof. Beela Satyanarayana, observed that the university was nurtured by a great visionary like Sir C.R. Reddy and elevated to greater heights by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and ably administered by Dr V.S. Krishna, all to ensure that greater room is offered to youngsters with keen minds. He urged the students to push the bar up and help the university gain greater heights.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that more than 75 Ph.D. degrees, 40 M.Phil., degrees were awarded in this convocation. Due to certain constraints, the AU would function with a budget deficit of Rs 27.61 crore, he added.
Earlier, Prof. Rajendra Prasad presented the honorary degree of Doctor of Science to Dr Saraswat, with the consent of the vice-chancellor, in presence of the Governor and chancellor of the university. This was the only honorary doctorate conferred this year. (Deccan Chronicle)
